Form-based code coming soon?
Form-based zoning places an emphasis on commercial building types, dimensions, parking locations, facades and the public spaces around and between buildings ... with less emphasis on the uses within those buildings.

Considered a "smart growth" fix to old-thinking zoning — particularly in larger cities across America — one challenge with form-based codes can be the connection between commercial and residential areas.

Two distinctly different approaches to form-based zoning are being circulated at City Hall. One version — crafted by neighborhood groups with developers — successfully addresses residential adjacency, proximity slope, and maintains city council member accountability.

I support this version.

Look for that to come back before City Council in February.

HUD grant hearings
In January, neighborhood hearings will take place across Dallas to solicit citizen input on the use of Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) grant funds for block grants, shelter grants, housing for persons with AIDS and other affordable housing programs.

While none of the six public hearings will be held in District 9, there are District 9 ramifications worth following. One of the closest public hearings to District 9 will be from 10 a.m. until 12 noon on Monday, Jan. 12, at the Willie B. Johnson Recreation Center, 12225 Willowdell.
